Tirzo Martha

No Excuses!

This autumn, Tirzo Martha (Willemstad, Curacao, 1965) will come  to Scheveningen. Museum Beelden aan Zee presents the first solo exhibition of the Curaçao sculptor and performance artist in the Netherlands. All exhibited artworks are new and specially made for this exhibition. In the course of the exhibition, a monumental installation will be created in collaboration with other people: the Monument of the Togetherness. The audience is witness to this process in the Main Hall of the museum.

Working together is characteristic of his work methods. He will make the Monument of Togetherness with different groups of people from society: students of the KABK, alumni students of the IBB, students of Leiden University and neighborhood residents from Scheveningen. These various groups look at the art in different ways and interact differently. Under the guidance of Tirzo Martha, these groups will work together. Ultimately, the social aspect, the cooperation and the awareness of cooperating is of great importance for the base of the monument.

Tirzo Martha is an artist with a message. His work is politically and socially committed. Community feel and social commitment are two core values in the oeuvre of Tirzo Martha. With his work, Tirzo Martha provides insight into the untouched and contradictory elements of Caribbean society. He is very involved with the youth of Curacao. In 2006, the artist was co-founder of the Istituto Buena Bista (IBB) - Curacao Center for Contemporary Art, an art school for young people. At the IBB, local young people with exceptional talent are prepared over the time of a year to apply for other art schools in, for example, the Netherlands, the United States, Trinidad or Cuba. The work of Tirzo Martha was featured in the United States, Germany, Portugal, Curaçao, Martinique, Santo Domingo and Cuba.

Recently his work in the Netherlands was seen at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The exhibition takes place later than planned due to delays in the transport of the artwork, due to the recent weather conditions in the Caribbean.
