About us

Museum Beelden aan Zee is a unique cultural institution in the Netherlands. It is the only Dutch museum that focuses exclusively on contemporary international sculpture. Its founders, Theo and Lida Scholten, started collecting in the late sixties and devoted a large part of their lives to acquiring rare works of art. They laid the foundation for the current collection of the museum, which opened in 1994 and now holds nearly two thousand sculptures, reliefs and medals and houses an ambitious exhibition and educational program.

The human image is the leitmotiv in the collection of museum Beelden aan Zee. The collection holds work from sculptors as diverse as Armando, Stephan Balkenhol, Iris Le Rütte, Tony Cragg, Per Kirkeby, Giacomo Manzú, Kiki Smith, Igor Mitoraj, Jan Meefout, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Shinkichi Tajiri and Cornelis Zitman.

Uniquely situated just off the world-renowned boulevard of Scheveningen, many of the museum's terraces and presentation rooms overlook the North Sea. Discover more about the acclaimed architecture of Wim Quist on this page about the museums building.
