In the fall of 2024, museum Beelden aan Zee will host the retrospective exhibition Miró Sculptures. It is the first exhibition in a Dutch museum devoted entirely to the fascinating sculptures of this Spanish master. The playful, experimental character of Joan Miró (1893- 1983) is central to it. The selection includes approximately 50 large- and smaller sculptures in various materials and came about thanks to unique collaborations with Fundacio Joan Miró in Barcelona, Fondation Maeght, the Design Museum Den Bosch, and a private collection. With this, the presentation focuses on a clear overview of the development of Miró's sculptural oeuvre, which largely consists of assembled and cheerfully painted bronze sculptures. With their formal language, they refer to his colorful, surrealist paintings that were populated by symbols such as circles, eyes, eggs and celestial bodies such as planets, the moon and stars. The modernity of Miro's style came from the artist's desire to constantly explore new possibilities. The spontaneity and pleasure in experimentation are therefore evident in his sculptures.
